Silver medal for Canada at Brazil Fast Triathlon

Our friends at Genki-Bar had two sponsored athletes at this race. They followed them closely.

Here is their update on the race

Two Saskatoon triathletes, Gabrielle and Rachael Edwards, along with London, Ontario elite athlete Tenille Hoogland, beat the heat to claim the silver medal and a cash prize in the 2011 Brazil Fast Triathlon.

The South African team won the gold medal and the Brazilians took bronze.  Rounding out the field were Italy, Argentina and Spain.

In 35 degree temperatures, these athletes competed in 3 short triathlons (250m swim, 3.6k bike, 1200m run), with 10 minutes rest between the heats.  In the first heat, Gabrielle was first out of transition 1 and finished 3rd with Tenille right behind at 4th and Rachael 6th.  Tenille had a strong finish in the second heat with third place.  Gabrielle was 8th and Rachael 10th. In the third heat, Tenille came up with a 2nd place finish, Gabrielle, who was pushed over in T1, fell slightly back, finishing 10th and Rachael just missing the bike pack, finshed 12th.  Overall, Tenille was 2nd, Gabielle, 8th and Rachael 10th.  With the race featuring 3 women who have competed in the Olympic Games and a crowd of 10,000, along with the Canadians facing a temperature differential of up to 60 degrees and fielding two of the youngest athletes, it was a sweet day in Brazil for Tenille, Gabrielle and Rachael.
