Valvano fût entraineur de basketball pour North Carolina University. Il est décédé du cancer en 1993, huit semaines après avoir livré un discours mémorable au ESPY Awards. Voici un extrait:
« To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. And number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that’s a full day. That’s a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you’re going to have something special. »

petite précision: il n’a pas pu être l’entraineur de Jordan au college puisque celui-ci jourait pour Dean Smith. Valvano a en fait entrainé North Carolina State University alors que Jordan jouait pour the University of North Carolina. Il a gagné le championnat NCAA en 82 et Valvano en 83.
Ceci n’enlève rien à la pertinence de cette citation.
